Book Details

There are many books that cover writing for publication or scientific writing, but only in general terms. The writing task is usually covered by brief overviews in books dedicated to the conduct of the research process. Discussion about writing from within specific methodologies, particularly qualitative methodologies, is very limited and confined to methodology specific books (eg Denzin N & Lincoln Y 2000 The handbook of qualitative research. 2^nd edn, Sage Publications, London).

Most books focus on how to set up and conduct research and few give serious attention, and then only in part, to writing the research to meet different requirements. Existing publications fail to address the nuances of the different approaches to research inquiry in discussions of writing research. They fail to make explicit the principles for writing consistent with the research approach employed.

The editors have not found a book which:

• provides a comprehensive focus on the research writing task;
• discusses how to arrange material for specific purposes;
• encompasses a range of commonly used research approaches and discusses the writing task from within each;
• links the writing process to the philosophical basis of the research approach.
